The Monadnock Region of New Hampshire is often referred to as the quiet corner. Rolling pastureland, quaint towns and wonderful hikes foster that image. All that changes one weekend in August.
History comes alive at Hillsborough’s 2 day extravaganza – August 19th and 20th. At 5 action packed sites around town, you might witness a battle, sew a star with Betsy Ross or fall under the spell of Mr. Bayly, 18th century magician. Bring your appetite for the pie eating contest or the ice cream social.
The woods and fields nearby Jones Road are where the battles will rage. Reenactors from the 42nd Highlanders, The Black Watch, 5th Mass Battery, 1st NH Calvary and Native Americans will stage battles from the French and Indian War, the Revolution and Civil wars.
The only president to hail from New Hampshire was Franklin Pierce. His boyhood home is the site of some of the activity including a lecture about antique quilts and a chance to meet General Grant, as portrayed by Sam Grant.
Downtown will host a farmer’s market and artisan faire.
Saturday night, the sky will explode with the “Jaffrey Festival of Fireworks”, a joint production of the Jaffrey Chamber of Commerce, Atlas Pyrovision and the Jaffrey Silver Ranch Airpark. Atlas is an international award winning fireworks company which has been based in Jaffrey since 1949. It’s reported that they put out more bang for their hometown than some of the major urban shows they create. This year’s theme is Motown Express!
Rain or shine, the festivities start at 4:00 with live bands, skydivers and a variety of game and food vendors. You can get tickets in advance or book at room at Benjamin Prescott Inn and watch from their grounds. We have other B&Bs nearby but you’ll have to travel to the Airpark to see the fireworks.
