What Exactly Is A Bed & Breakfast and What is NHBBA...

What exactly is a B&B?

This is a question that we, as innkeepers, hear quite often. Sometimes this question is asked as potential guests are on the phone with us about to make a reservation, and sometimes it is asked apprehensively as we are checking a guest in to our bed and breakfast.

Many people envision that a stay at a bed and breakfast includes having the innkeepers "live among" the guests, sleeping in bedrooms in close proximity to the owners and having breakfast at the owner's breakfast table. Others envision more of an "Airbnb" situation, where a home owner simply rents out a bedroom in their house and your stay is spent side by side with the homeowner.

While the two aforementioned examples may have slight similarities to a bed and breakfast of old, in more ways those examples are very different from an experience you would encounter today at a bed & breakfast, especially at a New Hampshire Bed & Breakfast Association (NHBBA) member b and b.

A stay at an NHBBA member bed and breakfast means:

  • You are staying at a professionally licensed business that follows safety and business regulations.
  • Your breakfasts are prepared in a licensed and inspected kitchen.
  • Although the B&B is the primary residence of your innkeeper, most if not all innkeepers have their own separate owner's quarters on property or in a separate section of the B&B.
  • You are staying at a B&B that is a small business and not part of a chain lodging organization, which allows each B&B owner to provide specialized individual attention to guests.
  • You will have access to "common areas" that you share with other guests, but the bedroom you have reserved for your stay is your private area.
  • You will find that each B&B has its own unique personality and amenities and all NHBBA B&Bs are operated by innkeepers who have a passion for providing their guests with the best quality experience!

What Is The New Hampshire Bed & Breakfast Association (NHBBA)?

The NHBBA consists of 39 member b&bs throughout New Hampshire. A 7 person Board works year round to assist members, promote the association, and strives to provide members with current lodging industry and educational information. The NHBBA Board works to partner with area cultural, historical, recreational, and tourism service providers informally and through our Tourism Partnerships to provide a wide variety of activities and attractions for guests.

When you visit NHBBA's website www.staynh.org you can search the exquisite group of current member b&bs located within six regions throughout New Hampshire. Our member innkeepers are knowledgeable about their areas and can recommend attractions, sightseeing activities and locations, and great places to shop and dine.

Here is just a small sampling of the wonderful things NHBBA member b&bs have to offer!

We are located in the charming town of Peterborough, a destination for artists and home to the famous MacDowell Art Colony. In the early 1900s our historic home was the residence for the male Colonists and has housed many accomplished artists over the years.

The Ash Street Inn, a Victorian Queen Anne style B&B in downtown Manchester, NH is a short walk away from excellent restaurants and only steps from the Currier Museum of Art. The B&B was built in 1885 as a wedding gift and many of the original details have been lovingly restored and maintained, such as many colorful stained glass windows and fireplace mantels.

Nestled in the quaint Monadnock Valley, the historic Benjamin Prescott Inn is a warm and inviting retreat. The flavor of antique New England living resonates while you enjoy a delicious breakfast set amidst hundreds of acres of graceful farmland. For some guests, our proximity to six covered bridges are what makes The Bridges Inn in Swanzey, NH special. Situated a stone's throw from the historic Thompson Covered Bridge, the inn and its guest rooms are named after the local covered bridges. Many guests drive the covered bridge loop, seeing all six nearly covered bridges, to complete their stay.

Pleasant View Bed and Breakfast is worth the trip and close to your favorite destinations – Newfound Lake, Mt Cardigan, Sculptured Rocks, bike trails, hiking trails, ski slopes.
